Your Literature Review Is Probably Missing Papers You'd Actually Want
Most literature reviews start the same way: you write down the terms you'd use to describe your topic, search a database or two, and work through what comes back. It's a reasonable approach, and it's also the exact reason most manual searches miss papers that would have been genuinely useful.
The problem isn't effort. It's vocabulary.
Researchers don't all describe the same idea the same way
A paper on "burnout in healthcare workers" and a paper on "occupational exhaustion among clinical staff" might be studying almost the same phenomenon, but a keyword search for one won't reliably surface the other. Fields evolve their own terminology, sub-disciplines diverge, and older papers often use language that's fallen out of fashion even though the findings are still relevant. If your search terms are drawn from how you'd phrase the idea, you're implicitly filtering out anyone who phrased it differently, which, over a large enough literature, is a lot of people.
This gets worse across disciplines. A concept in psychology and the "same" concept in economics or public health will often have completely separate vocabularies, separate flagship journals, and separate citation networks that rarely cross-reference each other, even when they're circling the same underlying question.
Recency bias sneaks in without you noticing
It's natural to search for recent work first, since it feels more relevant and easier to justify to a reviewer. But citation count and relevance don't map cleanly onto publication date. A ten-year-old paper that's been cited five hundred times is doing more work in its field than most of what's been published in the last year, and skipping it because it didn't show up on the first page of recent results is a real gap, not a minor omission.
A few things that help
Search in synonyms, not just your first phrasing. Before you start, write down three or four different ways someone might describe your topic, including ones from adjacent fields if relevant. Search all of them, not just the one that feels most natural to you.
Check who cites the papers you already have. If you've found two or three strong sources, looking at what cites them (and what they cite) surfaces work that shares their framing, even if it doesn't share your search terms.
Don't stop at the first database. PubMed, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, arXiv, and Europe PMC each index different slices of the literature, and a paper missing from one often shows up cleanly in another.
Weigh citation count against recency deliberately, not by accident. A quick sanity check, sorting results by citations, then separately by date, and comparing the two lists, tells you fast whether you're missing an influential older paper.
